ALSO, SCIENCE FAIR IS AROUND THE CORNER!
This morning we reviewed the top 20 most populated cities, racing to identify them on a map. YOUR CHILD CAN CHOOSE TO TAKE THE TEST ON THURSDAY OR FRIDAY MORNING. Please have your child locate them on a map. Last week's blog has the cities in order. Search "New York City" on the blog.
The new Top 100 SAT words of the week, which we sang as our learning method, are:
parched: dried out by heat or excessive exposure to sunlight
perfidious: tending to betray
pragmatic: concerned with practical matters
precocious: exceptionally early development or maturity (especially in mental aptitude)
pretentious: making claim to or creating an appearance of (often undeserved) importance or distintion
Grammar reviewed adverbs. Adverbs ask "how? when? where?" An example is: The dog walked very quietly. "very" is an adverb, because we ask: How quietly? "very". Adverb. Walked how? "quietly" Adverb.
We worked more on 3-point essays. Tomorrow they will begin to be typed.
We started reading Crispin: Cross of Lead, by Avi. It is a Newbery Award Winner. HOMEWORK IS TO READ CHAPTERS 2 AND 3 TONIGHT. Great book!
MATH HOMEWORK IS TO MAKE SURE THE REVIEW #8 IS DONE AND ALL OTHER HOMEWORK IN WORKBOOK UNIT #8 IS DONE. We will be taking a test tomorrow.
After lunch we read and worked on Meridian Math Club. I also had some students read to me, to test reading fluency.
Our Writer's Workshop was great. Next week we will be creating interactive mystery boards, but for this week we are finishing off our mystery clues. Many students are writing heaps of descriptive clues to point to the solution of their mystery. Clues should be finished by Friday.
4th Graders went to art. 5th Graders worked on writing complete sentences and paragraphs for History review questions about the Rome and began their Chapter One and Two projects. MIDDLE AGES PROJECTS ARE DUE WEDNESDAY. They should take no longer than 15-20 minutes to complete. They don't need to be elaborate, just complete. Please see Friday's post (February 22nd) for the details. Students are also creating small family crests to tape to their desks.
After P.E. we watched Bill Nye's Electrical Currents movie.
