This morning we introduced large cities. New York City has over 8 million people. We worked on vocabulary projects, grammar, and read more Ben and Me. All students have now completed their three-point essay points. Tomorrow we will generate opening and closing paragraphs.
MATH HOMEWORK IS HALF OF THE REVIEW #7. We continue to review area and perimeter. The decimal unit has moved fairly quickly. We are slated to take the test Thursday or Friday.
This afternoon was our heavy specialist schedule. After Foreign Language, Drama, Dance/yoga/karate, and Music, we had a quick recess and worked on puppets, which are almost finished.
Please bring the $10 for the Hope of America CD, T-shirt, and picture. It is due tomorrow.

We made Valentine's folders to hang from our desks. We are looking for good and funny things others do, to build unity. It was fun watching kids write secret notes to each other. (Only appropriate, kind, nice, and upbuilding things are allowed!)

This year we have the opportunity to perform with over 6,000 students from 74 Utah County schools in the “Hope of America” student chorus showcase. This one-hour patriotic program will be presented on Wednesday, April 17th. the BYU Marriott Center. Students need to be in their seats by 6:15 or they will be unable to sit in the flag formation with their class.
“Hope of America” promotes love of country, music, and good citizenship through a memorable participatory event. The chorus wears red, white, blue, or yellow “Hope of America” t-shirts. They sit in the shape and colors of the American flag, framed by students in yellow.
There is a $10 fee for each participating student. This cost helps us provide the following to each student:
- CD Take home practice CD and lyric sheet
- T-Shirt A 2013 t-shirt design
- Event Photo Delivered to your school after the performance
There is no charge for attending the event or parking. Final performance detail will be given in March.

In Grammar we classified sentences. Then we read two more chapters in Ben and Me, about the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War. We then worked more on our 3-point essay organizing. We will be writing these essays on Wednesday.
MATH HOMEWORK IS EXERCISE 20. Students need to draw the bar models to find the correct answers. We will be taking Test 7 toward the end of the week, so it is imperative that students complete all of Unit 7 in the Workbook.
After lunch we had Meridian Math Club and Structured Independent Reading. STUDENTS SHOULD BE BUSILY READING A BOOK OF THEIR CHOICE FOR A BOOK REPORT AT THE END OF THE MONTH.
For Writer's Workshop, we wrote the first clue in our mystery. The clues were descriptive, and they had to point us toward the ending we wrote last week.
After a well-earned recess, Fifth Graders had Science and Fourth Graders had Art. In Science we worked on our Science Fair question, hypothesis and experiment. SCIENCE FAIR IS MARCH 1ST. A registration packet will go home tomorrow. PLEASE DISCUSS AND PLAN THE SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT WITH YOUR CHILD A.S.A.P.!!
P.E. and then Science National Geographic clips of real scientists and scientific problems finished up the day.

This morning we did our Mountains/Landforms Test and our Language Arts Test. Students finished spelling activities, learned how to organize a 3-point essay, and we read two more chapters in Ben and Me.
MATH HOMEWORK IS EXERCISE 18. Be sure your child is dividing the right number! 3/5 is 3 divided by five, or 3 divided into 5 parts. We spent quite a while dividing the number 1 into many different parts. We also reviewed area and perimeter with rectangles inside rectangles.
Most students have finished the endings of their mysteries. If not, they need to complete those this weekend, so we can work on the clues next week. Students are broadening their writing skills by choosing to author newspaper articles, recipe books, magazine articles, brochures, sports cards, any kind of writing. We also worked more on other stories we have been writing.
5th Grade went to Art. 4th Grade attended Cultural Roundtable. Then the 4th Graders had poetry and science. In poetry we wrote nature topics and switched papers so others could write Haikus about our topic. They were very descriptive. We took apart a standing weight scale, to see how it worked.
IF YOU HAVE ANY SMALL BROKEN APPLIANCES AT HOME, PLEASE SEND THEM IN, SO WE CAN TAKE THEM APART!
After working on our puppets some more, students went to Music. Many students are auditioning for the Willy Wonka play. It takes courage! They are doing so well.

A NOTICE WENT HOME YESTERDAY REGARDING "MOMS AND MUFFINS" ON FRIDAY MORNING FROM 7:30-8:00. THIS IS A SPECIAL READING OPPORTUNITY FOR MOTHERS AND THEIR CHILDREN. If no mother is able to come, fathers and grandparents are welcome to attend.
This morning soooo many kids brought in reading logs!!! Good job!
We learned about the Coastal Range, running up the western coast of California. We found out that the maritime climate creates lots of water for the Californian mountain ranges. In fact, when the transcontinental railroad was built, the snow on the Sierra Nevada Range was over 40 feet high!
For SAT word practice students continued writing sentence snakes in a blank wordfind. Please check the word definitions from yesterday. Use them a lot in conversation.
Grammar introduced various possible sentence fragments, including subjects, predicates, and prepositional phrases. We also reviewed CD, SCS, SCV, SS, and other kinds of sentence structure.
Finishing Jonathon Livingston Seagull last week opened up an interest for animal fiction. We have leaped into Ben and Me, a humorous animal non-fiction, in which Ben Franklin's real fame comes from ideas from the mouse in his fur cap.
Our spelling activity for the week merges visual, verbal and kinesthetic intelligences. Students are creating quick sculptures or three-dimensional objects and decorating them with spelling words from their word sort.

If your children have problems with the multiplying, please remind them that multiplication is addition. Have them add the decimals with the decimal points lined up, and add repeatedly to find out the answer. It is crucial that the decimal point be in the right place. We will be learning "tricks" to multiplying decimals, but first it is essential that students understand the repetitive addition principle.
After lunch students enjoyed Foreign Language. It is Foreign Language week. Ask each day what activities were done at lunch!
Next was drama, yoga/karate/dance, and music. IF STUDENTS WANT TO AUDITION FOR SPECIFIC PARTS IN THE CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY PLAY, THEY MUST DO THIS TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS IN THE MUSIC ROOM AFTER SCHOOL.
At the end of the day, we will review the physical characteristics of the U.S.A. We will test ourselves on mountain ranges and plains. We will also visit the computer lab and test our typing fluency.

READ! PLEASE READ! AND TRACK YOUR CHILD'S READING!!! SEND THE SLIPS BACK WITH YOUR KIDS!
This morning students who brought in Jazz Readathon slips updated their square grids for their graph. I would encourage you to come downstairs and look at your child's progress. All slips must be signed by parents to be valid entries for the competition. One of our students has already hit the ceiling!!!
We located and labeled Mt. Elbert, in Colorado, at over 14,000 feet. THERE IS A TEST ON MOUNTAINS AND MOUNTAIN RANGES ON FRIDAY. A study guide is going home today.

We labeled 4 sentences in grammar. Students need to remember to ask: Verb what? This question points them straight to the Direct Object, labeled DO.
We then chose books for February's Independent Reading Book Report. These book reports will be due the last week of February. The book is free choice, preferably not non-fiction, as we will be doing non-fiction research paper type book reports in March. Some students bemoaned the fact that they have books at home to read. I want them to have at least one book
Math is rocking. TONIGHT'S HOMEWORK IS THROUGH EXERCISE 9. We reviewed area and perimeter, worked on a visual method of subtracting decimals - pictorial. Some kids got it. We will revisit it again tomorrow. It takes a little while for the picture form of subtracting to "take", because the kids are so dependent on vertical subtraction. Vertical subtraction is okay, if the kids remember to line up the decimals, but it makes the students very dependent on the basic recall of subtraction facts from 0-20. The pictorial method puts subtraction in the spatial part of the brain, which then must "plow" a new trail to the logical/mathematical section of the brain, allowing for easier math crossing paths in future calculus, etc.
After lunch we had a very interesting discussion about adoption, read in SIR and held Meridian Math Club.
For Writer's Workshop, students brainstormed the ending of their mysteries. We worked on the beginning of the mysteries last week, asking questions like who, where, when, why, what, how? The beginning takes us to the problem. The ending solves the mystery. Both should be about 1/2 page long. We will continue working on the endings this week. The middle clues will take another few weeks.
Science for 5th Graders was asking questions about electricity. We are filling the bulletin board with questions we would like to answer. We would also like to interview an electrician about his work.

THERE WILL BE TALENT SHOW AUDITIONS TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS AFTER SCHOOL. TALENT SHOWS WILL BE HELD MONTHLY.

This morning we learned about many famous people through biography book reports. We took our Language Arts test, had a Spirit Day assembly, and finished Jonathon Livingston Seagull. Business letters were handed in and look very professional. SOME STUDENTS STILL HAVE A THREE POINT PARAGRAPH TO HAND IN FROM LAST WEEK.
MATH HOMEWORK IS EXERCISES 4 & 5. It is very important to line up decimals when adding or subtracting. We also went over the Cum. Test 1-6. PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD REDO ANY MISSED PROBLEMS, SIGN YOUR NAME TO THE TEST, AND SEND IT BACK TO ME ON MONDAY.
After lunch we had Cultural Roundtable. Then the 5th Graders went to Art and the 4th Graders learned some poetry, watched a science movie about electricity, and destroyed a set of headphones to see how they had been constructed.
We had a wonderful recess outside. It was warm enough for just a t-shirt!
